COLUMBIA, S.C. – Duke softball finished 3-0 on the opening weekend of fall ball play after sweeping Georgia Southern and South Carolina in a doubleheader on Sunday.
The Blue Devils shutout Georgia Southern, 10-0, in the opening game before defeating the host Gamecocks, 7-2, in the nightcap.
Against the Eagles, the pitching staff of sophomore
Sophie Garner-MacKinnon, senior
Lillie Walker and graduate student
Dani Drogemuller combined for five strikeouts through seven scoreless innings, surrendering just one walk and two hits.
Offensively, graduate student
Gisele Tapia led the team, going 2-for-3 at the plate with one home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore
Aminah Vega and junior
Ana Gold also went yard to extend the Blue Devils' edge. Vega and Gold both went 3-for-4 with one walk and one home run. Vega also drove in three runs.
Senior
Jala Wright controlled the circle in the nightcap after tossing six innings and allowing just one hit with five strikeouts.
Classmate
Claire Davidson was explosive on offense against the Gamecocks, driving in five of Duke's seven runs with a double and home run. Vega drove in the other two runs after going a perfect 3-for-3 and finished 6-for-7 on the day with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored.
Duke returns home to host East Carolina at Duke Softball Stadium on Friday. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
