DURHAM – Duke men's soccer has three freshmen on the TopDrawerSoccer Freshman Midseason Top-100, as the organization announced its initial freshman rankings on Tuesday.
Julian Eyestone debuts inside the top 10 and is joined in the national rankings by
Ulfur Bjornsson and
Bull Jorgensen.
Eyestone, a native of Dallas, Texas, is listed as the ninth-best freshman after reclassifying to the 2023 recruiting class and joining the Blue Devils a year early. He has provided a consistent goalkeeper presence for Duke, playing all 1,080 available minutes between the pipes for the Blue Devils. He tallied the first shutout in his career in just the second match of the season, making five saves in a 6-0 Duke win over Furman and recorded back-to-back clean sheets against Princeton and Virginia in early September. His fourth shutout of the year came in a mid-week matchup against Elon, a game that Duke prevailed, 3-0. He most recently matched a career high with five saves against NC State while helping the Blue Devils defeat their in-state ACC foe, 2-1, at Koskinen Stadium.
Bjornsson and Jorgensen are Duke's two international freshmen, from Iceland and Norway, respectively, and have combined for three goals and three assists through the first 12 games. Bjornsson, tabbed at No. 28, is the fourth Icelandic player to don the Duke jersey over the last four years and has scored three goals while adding two assists, for a total of eight points. Two of his three goals have come against ACC competition (Virginia, Syracuse) and he found the back of the net in back-to-back matches against Princeton and the Cavaliers in early September. Jorgensen, coming in at 90th in the rankings, has provided a steady presence in the midfield for the Blue Devils and logged an assist in his first career game as a Blue Devil, setting up one of Duke's goals in its 6-0 win over Furman.
Eyestone is the only goalkeeper inside the top 10 and the Blue Devils are one of three ACC schools to have a freshman ranked inside the top 10, with Duke joined by Virginia and Wake Forest. The Blue Devils and Demon Deacons are the two ACC schools with three freshmen ranked inside the Top 100.
