AUGUSTA, Ga. – Duke graduate student Porter Wilson was recently named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2023 Ray Guy Award, the organization announced in partnership with the Augusta Sports Council.
Wilson was also tabbed a semifinalist during the 2020 season.
Â
The Akron, Ohio, native has booted 38 punts for 1,808 yards, averaging 47.58 yards per punt in nine games this season. Additionally, he has impressively pinned 16 punts inside the 20-yard line and boasts 16 punts of 50-plus yards. Only 14 of his 38 punts have been returned this season for a total of 34 yards to average 2.43 yards per return, a mark that ranks Duke 12th nationally and first in the ACC.
Â
Wilson ranks seventh nationally and first in the ACC in punting (47.58) and is a significant reason why Duke ranks second in the country in net putting (44.67). He was previously named to the Ray Guy Award "Ray's 8" list on three occasions this season, including being tabbed the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week for Week 10.
Â
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
