DURHAM – The Voice of the Blue Devils, David Shumate, sat down with graduate offensive lineman Jacob Monkfor a brief question and answer session.
DS: When you hear senior night, what's the first thing that comes to mind for you? JM: Just all the work that when into it. It means the world to us to see where this program went, and to see the trajectory that it's on right now.
DS:Going out there for the final time playing at Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium for the final time. With the way you grew up and your family connections and everything that comes with it, what will the emotions be like for you on Saturday? JM: This is probably one of the things where you won't realize what it is until it's over. Maybe a couple of weeks, maybe a couple of months, maybe a year down the road, you won't realize what it's like and what you did here until it's over. So, we'll just see how it goes.
DS: I know there is more work to do this weekend with the game against Pittsburgh, but how proud are you of what you guys have accomplished for the program? It's been down, it's been up and now you guys' kind of have it moving in the right direction. How proud are you for what you guys have done the last couple years? JM: I'm extremely proud of the guys in this locker room, the coaches, and just you know what we've done. We've been through a lot as a group and seeing that we turned around this program, we beat all odds for sure.
DS: When I ask you about the offensive line specifically, obviously the rushing statistics have been good, and you guys don't give up many sacks, you and Graham [Barton] specifically. I know we've battled back and forth about the nickname you guys have come up with over the years but tell me about your guys' relationship. JM:That's my dude man. I remember the first day he came in. A little knucklehead for sure, but I like him though. I love him to death and pretty sad it is our last time lining up together at home for sure.
DS:You and DeWayne [Carter] have been captains together for the last two years. You get to go up against them in practice every day. What's your guys' relationship like and how special would this be this weekend as you guys get to share this day? JM:You know, that's my line-brother. That's my brother. That's my roommate. Everything. It's definitely crazy what we have done here at this university. It has been an honor to play with someone like DeWayne 'Mr. Duke', and it's definitely sad for sure that it has to end.
DS:I'll let you go on this, there's a football game too, right. You guys play Pitt, how significant is it for you guys to get a win over Pittsburgh? Obviously with the emotions and the reflection that comes with it, but just finish this out with a win. JM: We need it you know; we definitely need it. I've never beaten Pitt, so it means a lot for us to go against a really good team, a really good defensive front. So, we've just got to go out there and do our thing.
