PHILADELPHIA - The Duke fencing team kicked off its 2023-24 slate this weekend at the Temple Open in Philadelphia, Pa.
Duke collected six top-three performances and 14 top-10 finishes
NOTABLES
- Senior foilist Christina Ferrari paced the women's squad on Saturday with a first-place finish. She went 9-0 during pool play to earn the No. 1 seed. She defeated UPenn's Sabrina Cho, 15-13, in the final.
- In her Duke debut, freshman Natalie Olsen earned a second-place finish in women's saber. She finished 8-1 during pool play and captured four wins to make it to the final. She fell to first-place finisher Leah Blum of UPenn, 15-10.
- Fellow rookie Vanessa Lin also placed second in women's epee. She played to an 8-0 record during pool play before falling to Jaclyn Khrol of Penn State, 15-8, in the final.
- Junior epeeist Allen Marakov paced the men's contingent on Sunday with a second-place finish in epee. He went 7-1 in pool play before falling to first-place finisher Ethan Insler (Johns Hopkins), 15-11.
- Freshman Samir Travers tied for third in men's saber after going 7-1 during pool play.
- Sophomore foilist Rachel Koo tied for third in her respective weapon following a 7-0 record throughout pool competition.
- This event was the first for several Duke freshmen — Natalie Olsen, Victoria Gorman, Zizi Newhard, Vanessa Lin, Samir Travers, Dayaal Singh, Noah Nager and Kozmo Rhyu.
