DURHAM – The voice of the Blue Devils, David Shumate, sat down with redshirt sophomore linebacker Tre Freemanfor a brief question and answer session.
DS: Since this game is going to be played near the holiday's I wanted to start by asking what your favorite holiday tradition is? TF: My favorite holiday tradition is building gingerbread houses or maybe watching the Polar Express and drinking hot chocolate when it gets to that part of the movie.
DS: I know the team had a gingerbread house building competition. Who do you think had the best one out of all the position groups, but you can't pick the linebackers. TF: For me I think it was the running backs. The stable. What they built was really nice. They were the only other group to have a yard and things in it, not just a blank space. They added trees and joined it with the stable, it was cool.
DS: You are sitting on 97 tackles right now this year and we haven't had a 100-plus tackle guy since Koby Quansah. When you are put alongside of names like that, what would it mean to you to get 100-plus tackles in the bowl game this weekend? TF: It would mean a lot to me to get 100-plus tackles at the bowl game. It is a goal that I set at the beginning of the year, and I know that I am approaching that mark, so it feels good.
DS: After beating UCF last year, the Blue Devils extended their bowl winning streak to four-straight games. How are you guys able to perform so well during this time of the year? TF: I think when you say there is a championship on the line people elevate their play to another level. We know we have a championship on the line, and they are going to give out a trophy and rings at the end of it all.
DS: You guys have had a historical year on the defensive side of the ball this season. What do you want to see from a defensive side to close it out? TF: I just want us to go out there and have a flawless performance to get back to how we started the season. I feel like we kind of fell off toward the end of the year. I want us to get back to being one of the top five defenses in the country.
