DURHAM – The ninth-ranked Duke women's basketball team pushed its win streak to four games on Sunday with a 50-40 victory over Miami at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Reigan Richardson led a balanced scoring effort for the Blue Devils (22-3, 12-2 ACC) for the second straight game as she matched her season high of 14 points while also grabbing three rebounds. Senior
Celeste Taylor added nine points and two rebounds and
Elizabeth Balogun chipped in seven points, three rebounds and two assists.
Kennedy Brown and
Shayeann Day-Wilson each contributed six points apiece, with Brown adding three boards and Day-Wilson tallying six boards and two assists to their respective statlines.
Jasmyne Roberts scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds to pace Miami (16-9, 9-5 ACC).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After trading baskets to open the game, Duke used a 6-0 run to open up a 9-3 advantage over Miami.
- The Blue Devils held a 15-7 lead after one, scoring six of the quarter's final 10 points while holding Miami to one make over its last eight attempts.
- Duke opened the second quarter with eight of the first dozen points, pushing its lead to 12 (23-11) with 5:17 to go in the period.
- The stretch ended with back-to-back midrange jumpers from Brown and Richardson, forcing the Hurricanes to burn a timeout.
- Duke closed the first half on a 13-2 run, capped off by Day-Wilson's trifecta from the left slot as time expired, and held the Hurricanes without a point for the final 4:25 of the second quarter to take a 32-13 lead into the break.
- Six different Duke players scored in the opening half, led by Richardson (7), Balogun (6) and Brown (6). Day-Wilson and Taylor each tallied five points and Mia Heide chipped in three.
- Day-Wilson paced the Blue Devils on the glass with four first-half rebounds while Vanessa de Jesus dropped a team-high four dimes.
- Miami got its offense going and outscored Duke 16-12 in the third, cutting its deficit to 13 via a 6-0 run late in the quarter.
- Richardson cashed in a jumper from the corner to snap a four-minute scoring drought, pushing the Duke margin to 44-29 heading into the final period.
- Taya Corosdale drilled a triple from the far-right corner and Richardson followed with a midrange jay from straightaway to give Duke a 49-34 lead at the 7:27 mark.
- The Hurricanes attempted a late rally and pulled within nine with 33 seconds remaining in the game.
- Day-Wilson went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to end the Duke scoring drought and produce the final margin, 50-40.
GAME NOTES
- With the win, Duke improves to 22-3 overall, 12-2 in ACC play and 12-0 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
- Duke also improves to 17-5 against Miami all-time.
- For the 14th time this season Duke held its opponent to 50 points or less.
- The Blue Devils held Miami to seven points in the first quarter and six in the second, marking the sixth and seventh consecutive period that Duke held its opponent to single digits.
- Reigan Richardson tallied her second straight and ninth double-digit scoring game of the season, matching her season high of 14 points.
- Vanessa de Jesus made her first start of the season and finished the game with five assists and three rebounds.
- The Blue Devils committed a season-low eight turnovers while conversely forcing 15 Miami turnovers – scoring 15 points off those miscues.
- Duke outrebounded Miami 35-30 and outscored the Hurricanes 14-4 off the bench.
