DURHAM – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association recently announced its 2022 NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction. Duke's quartet of
Alayna Burns,
Issy Carey,
Alaina McVeigh and
Macy Szukics represented the Blue Devils on the list.
This is the third consecutive Scholar of Distinction honor for Burns, while the other three Blue Devils garnered the recognition for the first time in their careers. Duke's four representatives are the second most among ACC programs with Louisville leading the way with seven.
Burns played in 14 games for the Blue Devils this past season, scoring two goals and adding an assist. The Medford, N.J., native notched tallies against Louisville and Colgate to push her career total to five. In her three seasons, Burns has played in 40 games and owns five goals and three assists for 13 points.
Carey, returning this season after missing 2021 to injury, led the Blue Devil attack in goals with nine. She amassed 21 points to rank second on the team. A native of Weybridge, England, Carey recorded her first career points as a Blue Devil with a goal and an assist against Maryland. She hit her stride in the second half of the campaign, registering 15 points in the final nine games, including a hat trick at Richmond.
A freshman in 2022, McVeigh missed her rookie campaign due to an injury suffered prior to arriving on campus. Szukics, a fellow rookie, had a solid first year for the Blue Devils. She played in all 18 games with three starting assignments at midfield. Szukics scored her first collegiate points with two assists at goal and notched her first goal int eh win at Richmond.
The Scholars of Distinction program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher through the first semester of the 2022-23 academic year.
As a team this past fall, the Blue Devils posted a 3.571 GPA with Carey earning Dean's List with Distinction. An Environmental Sciences and Policy major, Miller is one of six players across the league to garner recognition for the third time.
