CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson's Sofia Chepenik tallied the game-winning goal to push Clemson past No. 13 Duke, 11-10, Saturday afternoon at Riggs Field.
Chepenik led the Tigers (7-2, 1-2 ACC) with four goals, including the equalizer and game winner, while goalie Emily Lamparter collected 11 saves in the cage.
Offensively, Duke (4-3, 0-3 ACC) was led by Caroline DeBellis and Katie DeSimone with three points each as DeBellis notched her 100th career point.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Clemson was first on the board at 10:41 just before DeSimone found the back of the cage less than a minute later. Both squads scored two goals apiece to close out the first 15 minutes (3-3), led by DeSimone's two points.
- The Blue Devils outscored Clemson 4-2 in the second stanza to open up a slight 7-5 advantage heading into intermission. DeBellis and Eva Greco found their offensive rhythms during that span as DeBellis notched her 100th-career point from a nice feed to Greco at 12:34.
- Duke's defense locked in and held Clemson scoreless for 15 minutes until late in the second quarter.
- Clemson came out of halftime firing on all cylinders to outscore Duke 3-1 and tied the game at 8-8 heading into the final 15 minutes.
- With 15 minutes left to play, Clemson quickly took a 9-8 advantage. Ainsley Thurston came off the bench for the Blue Devils and had a nice heads up play to see DeBellis wide open in front of the cage to even the contest (9-9) with just under seven to play.
- Duke tallied its final goal of the game as DeSimone regained the lead for Duke at 5:22 as she tiptoed around the crease just before the shot clock expired.
- Clemson got a few good looks for the equalizer, but couldn't put anything on cage until Chepenik notched consecutive goals to seal the deal for the Tigers, 11-10. Duke had 2:30 to work with, but couldn't find the answer.
NOTABLES
- Duke drops to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
- Senior defender Cubby Biscardi filled up the stat sheet as she tallied a career-high five ground balls and tied her career high in draw controls (5). She also picked up two caused turnovers.
- Eight different Blue Devils tallied a point in the setback.
- DeBellis becomes the 37th Blue Devil to reach the 100-point plateau.
- Shaye Fitzpatrick earned the start in the cage and tallied four saves.
- The victory was Clemson's first against a ranked opponent and its first ACC win in program history.
