PINEHURST, N.C. -- The Duke men's golf team are in a tie for sixth place after the first 36 holes of play at the Wake Forest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 2. The Blue Devils were led by
Luke Sample in the first two rounds, as the sophomore heads into Tuesday in a tie for fourth place on the leaderboard at 2-under.
HOW IT HAPPENED: FIRST ROUND
- Duke finished the first round in a tie for first place after an opening 18-hole score of 2-over 282.
- Ian Siebers had the low score of the morning for the Blue Devils with a 3-under, 67, to start the day. The junior started on No. 5 and birdied three of his first five holes before playing the back nine bogey-free and in 1-under 34. A late bogey moved Siebers into a tie for second place on the leaderboard.
- Luke Sample had the second under-par round of the first round, carding a 1-under, 69. The New York, N.Y., native birdied holes 10 and 11 to get into red numbers and rolled in a birdie putt on his final hole of the round, the par-3 sixth, for his fifth birdie of the day. Sample started the second round in a tie for fifth place.
- Two birdies on both the front and back nines highlighted the first round for Kelly Chinn. The sophomore made birdie on both of Pinehurst No. 2's par-5's en route to a first-round 2-over, 72.
- Ethan Evans played steady golf in his first round, making par on 13 of his 18 holes. A birdie on the par-4 second helped Evans finish with a 4-over, 74, in the first round.
- Also for Duke, William Love signed for a 5-over 75 after his opening round.
- Competing as an individual, Daniel Choi carded an 8-over, 78, in the first round.

- Pinehurst No. 2 presented a difficult test for all teams as the day continued, with only two lineups finishing with an under-par score in the second round.
- Luke Sample led the scoring for Duke in the afternoon with a 1-under, 69. He started quickly, carding two birdies within his first five holes. Two bogeys scattered throughout his next eight holes were offset by a birdie on his second-to-last hole -- the 576 yard, par-5 fifth. Sample enters Tuesday's final round in a tie for fourth place on the leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 2-under 138.
- A second-round 4-over, 74, was turned in by Kelly Chinn. The sophomore rolled in birdies on No. 5 and No. 12 in the afternoon and starts the final round in a tie for 36th place.
- Ethan Evans carded a birdie on the par-5 10th hole after starting his round on No. 8 and ended the day with a second-round 5-over, 75.
- A triple bogey slowed Siebers' first-round momentum and the junior went on to sign for a 6-over 76 to finish the first day of competition in a tie for 20th at 3-over.
- Also for Duke, William Love carded an 8-over, 78, in his second round.
