DURHAM – Thanks to over 50 incredible donors, Duke University has received $3.9 million in gifts supporting Duke Women's Athletics. The successful 50 For 50 Fundraising Project achieved its goal of securing 50 gifts of $50,000+ in recognition of Duke's 50 years of Women's Varsity Athletics, as well as honoring the 50th Anniversary of Title IX.
The donations support areas such as the Varsity Club funds for Women's Varsity programs, the Duke Women's Impact Network Athletics Scholarship Fund, and sport-specific Women's Athletics scholarships. Duke Vice President and Director of Athletics, Nina King, acknowledges the impact of this project.
"Duke has sponsored Women's Varsity Athletics since before Title IX was implemented nationally and is proud to continue to do so at the highest level," said King. "It is abundantly clear how athletics promotes leadership development and as a world-class institution Duke is one of the premier places for young people to learn and grow. We are greatly appreciative of all those who inspired this effort and generously gave to support it."
"Title IX has truly changed the lives of countless women over the past fifty years," said Duke Women's Lacrosse Head Coach of twenty-seven years, Kerstin Kimel. "The generosity of those supporting women's athletics at Duke speaks to the importance of sport in building critical life skills and the incredible opportunities that Duke provides these young women."
With this new funding, Duke will be able to provide resources to all fifteen women's varsity programs along with continuing building future female leaders while promoting the values of Duke University: Respect, Trust, Inclusion, Discovery, and Excellence.
"Our sincerest gratitude goes out to all those who donated to support broad-based programming for Duke Athletics, and specifically Duke Women's Athletics," said King. "We look forward to continuing this momentum in conjunction with the yearlong celebration of Title IX."
