DURHAM – Virginia Tech's Maura O'Malley scored in the third overtime to send the Hokies past No. 20 Duke, 14-13, Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
O'Malley was quiet all afternoon before notching the tying goal to send it to overtime with two seconds remaining and then the eventual game winner in the third overtime.
Katie DeSimone and
Lexi Schmalz each recorded hat tricks to pace the offense in the setback as Schmalz led all scorers with four points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams were all tied up after 60 minutes of action to send the contest to overtime. Anna Callahan tallied the go-ahead goal with 1:47 remaining in regulation (13-12) before Virginia Tech's O'Malley notched the score 44 seconds into triple overtime.
- Duke held a three-goal advantage (4-1) after the first 15 minutes of action as Callahan, Schmalz and Katie Keller all found the back of the cage. The Hokies forced two shot clock violations in the opening 10 minutes, but could not find an answer for Duke's early offense.
- The Hokies outscored the Blue Devils 5-3 in the second quarter as Ella Rishko led the charge with two goals.
- All tied at 6-6 after the intermission, Virginia Tech quickly took the lead with three unanswered goals in three and a half minutes. Duke answered with four of the next five goals. Maddie Jenner sparked the comeback with a player-up goal before DeSimone found the back of the cage twice, including a player-down connection.
- After 45 minutes, this crucial ACC contest was tied at 10-10, the fifth tie score of the game. Schmalz got her second career hat trick quickly into the fourth quarter on a nice free-position opportunity before Eva Greco and Caroline DeBellis teamed up to give Duke a two-goal lead (12-10) with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. The Hokies connected on three of the next four, including the tying goal with two seconds remaining.

- Duke moves to 6-6 overall and 1-5 in ACC play.
- The all-time series moves to 23-4 in favor of Duke.
- This was Duke's first overtime game since 2019 and the first triple overtime since 2002.
