DURHAM – 'The All 22' podcast, an Inside Look at Duke Football, is back for the spring season and the final episode is now available via iTunes and Google Play.
The podcast, hosted by football radio crew members David Shumate, Dave Harding and John Roth, features guests including current and former players and members of the Blue Devil coaching staff as well as local and national football reporters to discuss all things Duke football.
With the Blue Devils back on the practice field, Mike Elko's group looks to build on a nine-win season during his first year in Durham. The final guest this spring will be the head coach himself as the crew hears his take on the offseason, the work that's already been put in during spring practices, and the opportunity that awaits this fall.
Below is a preview of the episode.
DS: Coach, we appreciate you taking the time to join us, I remember you joked last year about how you were passing out name tags with everyone just trying to get to know each other in the spring. How different is this year compared to where you were last year at this point?
ME: Yeah, I mean, you probably can't even measure how big of a difference it is. Year one is such a freight train to get to the finish line and you're trying to learn people, you're trying to learn where they best fit positionally, and it's such a layer one conversation with everything you're doing. Then, you know, you spend a whole year with everybody, and you come back and you bring a lot of the organization back for year two and the starting point is, well, you can't even envision how much higher it is compared to last year. Now kids have spent so much more time on the details and kind of building their craft, and a little bit of the finer points of the execution and, hopefully, ultimately that leads to a better product on the field on Saturdays.
DS: Before we get to what you guys are doing in April here, I remember you said last year, and certainly Coach [David] Feeley said this for a lot of the guys, it was a little bit of a shock to the system - his training regimen when he first got on campus. I would imagine he's the type of guy that likes to turn the dial though, was it still a shock this January and February when the guys got into his lab a little bit?
ME: Yeah, we joked a little bit during some of the early workouts where I think the guys got beaten up pretty good. I said to a few of them, dude, you didn't think year two would be easy, did you? (laughing) I think we're just trying to find ways to challenge the guys. I think that's the nature of this program is to find ways to continue to develop them every year and challenge them every year so that we stay hungry, and we stay the team that we showed we could be last fall.
