PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – The 14th-ranked Blue Devils closed out the final day of competition at the 2023 NCAA Rowing Championships at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, N.J., on Sunday.
As a team, Duke saw its best finish in program history, placing 14th amongst a tough 22-team field with 56 points in the championship. In their four prior appearances, the Blue Devils finished 17th overall with 45 points in 2016, 16th with 47 points in 2019, 16th with 55 points in 2021 and 16th with 45 points in 2022.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Second Varsity Eight opened the final day of racing in strong fashion with a first-place finish in the C Final.
- The 2V8 was in a tight race with the crew from No. 15 Rutgers at the 1,000-meter mark before pulling ahead in the final stretch to record the winning time of 06:42.301.
- Duke's Varsity Eight followed with a third-place performance in their C Final race after powering past the boats from No.16 Indiana, No. 18 Southern California and Northeastern to cross the finish line at 06:36.15.
- The Varsity Four closed out the competition against five other nationally ranked teams in No. 9 California, No. 5 Washington, No. 11 Michigan, No. 13 SMU and No. 12 Ohio State in the Petite Final.
- The Blue Devils' V4 crew of coxswain Mia Khamish, Grace Matos, Amelia Shunk, Shae Simpson and Chloe Zollman stroked their way to a fifth-place finish, clocking a time of 7:28.979.
