Garrett Leadmon was taken with the 22nd pick overall by Whipsnakes LC in the 2023 Premier Lacrosse League College Draft televised on ESPNU Tuesday night.
Leadmon is the seventh Blue Devil to be drafted into the Premier Lacrosse League since the inaugural draft in 2019. He will join former All-American midfielder
Brad Smith on Whipsnakes.
A talented two-way player, Leadmon can score from the midfield, but also excel as a short stick defensive midfielder. In 2023, Leadmon leads the Blue Devils' first midfield line with 28 points from 21 goals and seven assists.
Leadmon has saved his best season for last. The Annapolis, Md., native's 28 points are a career-high in a season, besting his 12 his rookie season. Leadmon had 17 goals in the past three years combined.
Standing at 6-4 and 225 pounds, Leadmon is an imposing presence on the field. Coming in following a stellar career at DeMatha High School, he started 10 games at midfield his freshman campaign before having his sophomore campaign cut short due to COVID-19.
After battling some injuries as a junior and playing in just 12 games, Leadmon spent last season playing as a defensive midfielder, giving Duke great depth in transition defense this season. For his career, Leadmon has played in 68 games with 24 starts. He has 50 goals and 18 assists for 68 points.
The Premier Lacrosse League opens its fourth season June 3 in Albany, N.Y. Featuring eight teams in the league, the PLL will travel to 12 different cities over the course of the regular season, including a stop in Charlotte June 9-1-.
