DURHAM – Duke women's basketball freshman
Jadyn Donovan and sophomore
Emma Koabel capped an exciting nine days of competition at the FIBA U19 Women's World Cup on Sunday, with Donovan and Team USA capturing the gold medal while Koabel and Team Canada secured the bronze medal.
Donavan earned her third career gold medal with the United States after the team grinded out a thrilling, 69-66, win over host Spain for the team's third consecutive gold medal and 10th overall. The squad's win streak at the FIBA U19 Women's World Cup reached 21 games after turning in a perfect 7-0 record that featured double-digit victories through the first six matchups and an average margin of victory of 42.6 points. Appearing in five games for the red, white and blue, Donovan scored eight points in back-to-back games against Argentina (Round of 16) and the Czech Republic (Quarterfinals), while also adding seven points against Germany in group play.
Koabel helped Team Canada make some history of its own at the FIBA U19 Women's World Cup, as her squad earned the bronze medal to tally just its second podium finish all-time – the first since 2017. Canada totaled a 6-1 overall record and concluded the competition in exhilarating fashion, rallying for an 80-73 come-from-behind overtime victory over France in the third-place game. Koabel also saw action in five games for her home country, which included an 11-point, four assist outing against Egypt in the final game of the group phase.
