DURHAM β A trio of Blue Devils have been selected by USA Field Hockey to attend the U-21 Junior Women's National Team Selection Camp. The athletes were selected through their performance at the 2023 U-21 Junior and Senior Nexus Championship, presented by Osaka Hockey, in July.
Representing Duke are sophomores
Paige Bitting and
Macy Szukics and freshman
Maggie Kondrath. TheΒ U-21 Junior Women's National Team Selection CampΒ will take place in January 2024, with specific timing and location to be determined.Β Β
"The U-21 Junior Nexus division that ran simultaneous to the Senior Nexus Championship provided an opportunity for athletes in the Olympic Development Pathway to compete alongside each other in an outstanding and professional environment," said Liz Sanders,Β USA Field Hockey's Director of Nexus. "This overlap created some of the best field hockey the country has seen in many years in Virginia Beach and the competitive U-21 Junior National Camp invitations is a marker of that."
Bitting and Szukics had strong rookie seasons for the Blue Devils, playing in all 18 games. A native of Hummelstown, Pa., Bitting earned 15 starting nods as an outside back and returns as one of the ACC's top defensive players. Β At the Senior Nexus Championship, she helped her squad to the silver medal.
Szukics, a midfielder, earned three starts in her first season as a Blue Devil. She made her debut on the stat sheet with a pair of assists in the win at Colgate. The Malvern, Pa., native notched her first goal at Richmond. She lined up with Team Barcelona at the Senior Nexus Championship in July.
Kondrath was the lone rookie Blue Devil set to compete at the final summer event. Hailing from Downington, Pa., and playing scholastically for the Hill School, Kondrath is a two-time MAX Field Hockey First Team All-American. She is ranked sixth in the Class of 2023 by MAX Field Hockey and has been a part of the USA Field Hockey national team program since earning a spot on the U15 USA Indoor Women's National Team as a freshman in high school.
The Blue Devils open preseason training Aug. 9 and play their first exhibition game at VCU Aug. 17. The 2023 squad debuts at home versus Indiana, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. Admission to field hockey games is free.
