DURHAM - Duke wrestling head coach
Glen Lanham announced that
Connor Barket,
Gaetano Console and
Jarred Papcsy will serve as captains for the upcoming 2023-24 season.
The trio of Blue Devils were all selected to serve as captains for the first time in their careers.
Barket, a native of West Lafayette, Ind., saw action in four matches during his initial season, including two against top-25 opponents. The sophomore is expected to step into the starting lineup at heavyweight, after making the jump up one spot from 197 pounds. Over the summer, he competed in the Under-20 U.S. Open Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., and finished 3-2 in the freestyle bracket.
A product of Barrington Hills, Ill., Console is coming off a 5-6 rookie campaign wrestling primarily at 165 pounds. He earned his spot in the starting lineup early, competing in the first seven duals of the season and faced nationally-ranked competition at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. Console joined Barket at the U-20 U.S. Open Wrestling Championships and put up a strong showing that saw him advance to the quarterfinals of the Greco-Roman competition. Heading into his sophomore season, Console will remain in the 165-pound weight class.
Papcsy enters his second season with the Duke wrestling program after graduating from NC State in 2022. During his time with the Wolfpack, Papcsy put together a 27-21 overall record at 141 pounds and recorded six falls. The Nazareth, Pa., native became a consistent part of the Blue Devils lineup at 141, seeing action in eight dual matches and three tournaments to compile an 8-13 ledger. This season, Papcsy will move up one weight class from 141 to 149 pounds.
