DURHAM – The Voice of the Blue Devils, David Shumate, sat down with redshirt senior defensive tackle DeWayne Carterfor a brief question and answer session.
DS: What is your favorite thing about the first game of the season? DC: The excitement, tensions, anxiety, butterflies. Whatever you want to call it. Just the emotions that come with playing live football again. It will be nice to get out there and hit someone in a different jersey for the first time.
DS: How do you approach all the preseason accolades and praise going into the season opener? DC: Expectations are expectations. They are external for a reason, and we keep things internal for a reason. We just focus on ourselves and continue to prepare our best to put the best product on the field Monday night. We understand that there are more eyes on us this year, but we just have to worry about ourselves.
DS: The team watches a movie before the game each week, do you have a favorite that you have to watch? DC: I would have to say Black Atom. I think it was the movie that we watched before the North Carolina game last year. I think after Jaquez Moorescored, he threw up some hand signals, which was actually the Black Atom signal. The team was inspired by the movie the night before, so we were all throwing up the signal during the game which was pretty cool.
DS: What does it say to have Clemson coming into Durham and the excitement for this program entering the season, knowing how the program has evolved in just one year with Coach (Mike) Elko? DC: Obviously, Clemson has been the gold standard of the ACC for a long time. I know we have a good team and have the right guys to go out there and perform. Opening up on Monday night is a cool experience to have in primetime, but at the end of the day it is just another game, and we have to handle business.
DS: What does it take to play in a big game? DC: You just can't change who you are. We did the work and preparation, so if you try to change that based on your opponent what does it say about your confidence and ability? We have worked hard for the last handful of months, and I am confident that our coaches have prepared us very well.
