DURHAM – No. 8 Duke softball (11-1) handed Boston University (13-1) its first loss of the season, 4-2, in the opening game before claiming an 22-0 run-rule victory over Michigan State (5-9) in the nightcap to sweep the second day of the Duke Invitational.
A trio of Blue Devils finished 4-for-7 during the two contests in senior
Claire Davidson, junior
Ana Gold and sophomore
Aminah Vega. Davidson, Gold and Vega also combined to score 13 of Duke's 26 runs on the night.
Senior
Lillie Walker and
Jala Wright earned the wins inside the circle. Walker threw 2.2 innings of relief against BU, while Wright tossed her third complete game in as many appearances and fanned a career-high 14 batters against Michigan State.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. BOSTON UNIVERSITY
- BU struck first with a solo home run off the bat of Brooke Deppiesse in the top of the second inning.
- The Blue Devils answered in the home half with an RBI-double from freshman Amiah Burgess to score Vega, who reached on an infield single.
- The Terriers pushed another run across the plate in the top of the fifth inning to regain the lead, 2-1.
- Senior Kelly Torres put the Blue Devils back in front with a two-RBI triple to bring in Vega and Davidson.
- Classmate Francesca Frelick followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Torres and round out Duke's four runs.
- Walker sat down the final three batters to claim the victory, 4-2.
NOTES VS. BOSTON UNIVERSITY
- Walker made her fourth appearance in the circle and improves to 2-0 on the season.
- Torres tallied her second career triple during the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. MICHIGAN STATE
- The Blue Devils came out firing against the Spartans, scoring four runs off four hits in the opening frame.
- Graduate student Gisele Tapia tacked on four more runs with a grand slam in the bottom of the second to push Duke ahead, 8-0.
- Duke unraveled Michigan State's defense in the third inning, using 10 hits to plate 14 additional runs and run away with the 22-0 advantage.
- The third inning scoring was highlighted by Frelick's grand slam out of left field and a three-run blast from Gold.
- Wright allowed just three Spartans to reach base during the contest on one hit and a pair of walks.
NOTES VS. MICHIGAN STATE
- Duke's 14 runs in the bottom of the third set a program record of runs scored in a single inning, passing the 11 scored against North Dakota State in the home opener on Feb. 14.
- Tapia matched Gold's single-game RBI record after tallying eight during the contest.
- Frelick sent out her first career grand slam against the Spartans.
- Wright's 14 strikeouts tied for second in Duke's single-game record books and she improves her ledger to 5-0 on the year.
- Duke carries an 11-game winning streak into the final day of the invitational.
UP NEXT
The Blue Devils wrap up action in the Duke Invitational on Sunday with a doubleheader against Villanova and Elon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
