PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – No. 11 Duke softball fell to No. 1 Oklahoma, 3-0, in the 2024 season opener in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, hosted by Triple Crown Sports, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Sophomore
Cassidy Curd earned the start in the circle and worked 2.2 innings while collecting three strikeouts. The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native was ultimately pinned with the loss after surrendering three runs off three hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore D'Auna Jennings led off for the Blue Devils, sending a base hit down the right field line on the first pitch she saw.
- Jennings advanced to second after junior Ana Gold reached on a hit by pitch but was left stranded as Oklahoma put the remaining two outs away.
- The game remained scoreless until the Sooners' Tiare Jennings sent a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the third inning.
- Oklahoma tacked on two additional runs using a pair of RBI-singles to stretch the lead to 3-0.
- The Blue Devils worked to spark a seventh-inning rally with senior Claire Davidson drawing a walk, followed by base hit to right field from sophomore Aminah Vega with one out.
- Senior Kelly Torres was hit by a pitch in the ensuing at bat to load the bases, but the Sooners sat down the next two batters to seal the victory, 3-0.
NOTES
- Senior Lillie Walker replaced Curd in the circle for 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just three hits and a walk.
- Classmate Jala Wright took over to face Oklahoma's final four batters, tossing one inning with one strikeout.
- Jennings, Vega and junior Kelsey Zampa each accounted for one of Duke's three hits during the contest.
- Overall, the Blue Devils hold a 7-4 record in games played on opening day since the program's inaugural 2018 season.
