Duke Falls to No. 8 Loyola in NCAA First Round

PHILADELPHIA - Eighth-ranked Loyola outscored Duke, 5-0, in the fourth quarter as the Blue Devils fell, 16-11, in NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament first round action Friday evening at Franklin Field.

Three different Greyhounds tallied hat tricks and were led by Regan Kielmeyer with a career-high five goals.

Katie Desimone was once again stellar for the Blue Devils and notched her 34th-career hat trick with five goals and an assist to lead all scorers. She cements herself as one of the Duke greats with 196 career goals and 273 career points as Duke's second all-time leading goal scorer. Her points rank her fourth in Duke lore.

Kennedy Everson got the start in goal and collected 11 saves to tie her career high, her fourth 10-plus save game this season.

Duke's defense limited Chase Boyle to two goals. She is second nationally with 4.21 goals per game while Sydni Black ranks tied for 12th with 3.84 and only had one this evening.

How it Happened

Lexi Schmalz got Duke going quickly with a goal 47 seconds into the contest. The Blue Devils held Loyola scoreless for seven minutes as Everson gathered three quick saves until the Greyhounds broke through at 7:58 with Georgia Latch's first tally (1-1).
DeSimone found the back of the cage twice in the opening quarter to leave the contest tied, 4-4, after the first 15 minutes.
Loyola outscored Duke, 3-1, in the second quarter to take a 7-5 lead into halftime.
Duke came out of the break firing on all cylinders with three goals in under three minutes. Schmalz notched her second while DeSimone scored and assisted on Bernstein's goal that gave Duke the lead (8-7).
Loyola tallied four of the next five goals, giving the Greyhounds a two-goal edge (11-9) before DeSimone and Maddie McCorkle added two scores to end the period all square at 11 apiece.
Tied 11-11 heading into the final 15 minutes, Loyola scored five unanswered goals to give the Greyhounds the victory. They outshot the Blue Devils 7-3 and put six of those on cage in the final quarter.

Duke finishes its 2024 season 10-9 overall with its 22nd trip to the NCAA Tournament.
DeSimone tallied her 34th career hat trick with her five goals.
Georgia Latch picked up two yellow cards and exited the game at 8:03 in the third quarter … Loyola's second leading scorer on the team.
DeSimone's six points today were her most since March 30 when she scored six against No. 8 Virginia.
Loyola outshot Duke, 32-21, as Duke committed 14 turnovers.
