SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame sophomore guard Hannah Hidalgo scored a game-high 19 points, and the top-ranked Fighting Irish held Duke to 22 second-half points to down the Blue Devils, 64-49, in ACC women's basketball action Monday night.
Taina Mair paced the Duke offense with 15 points, while freshman
Toby Fournier had nine. Sophomore
Jadyn Donovan had a team-best seven rebounds to lead the charge on the glass. Duke trailed by just two at the half, but a 16-1 run by Notre Dame to start the third quarter put the Blue Devils away.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke held a 19-16 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play, Mair leading the offensive efforts with nine first-quarter points.
- The first quarter featured three ties and four lead changes across the opening six minutes of play. Donovan caused a Notre Dame miscue and fed it ahead to Mair on the break, who dropped in a floater to give Duke a 16-14 advantage.
- Fournier added a free throw and sophomore Jordan Wood cashed in a jumper from the right wing while defensively to push the margin to five.
- Defense was the story in the second quarter as the teams combined for just 21 points on 27-percent shooting. Notre Dame finished the quarter with a plus-five margin on the scoreboard and took a slim, 29-27 edge into the half.
- Both teams struggled to take care of the ball in the second period, combining for 11 turnovers. Notre Dame had six and Duke gave it away five times.
- The Fighting Irish took control of the game in the third quarter, holding Duke to just one point in the first 5:32 of the stanza. Notre Dame, leading 46-28 at the midway point, kept the pressure on in the final five minutes as the Blue Devils went 2-of-11 from the floor. Notre Dame shot 45 percent from the field in the quarter, heading into the fourth with a 15-point lead.
- Duke found its rhythm in the fourth quarter but could not overcome the 15-point deficit. The Blue Devils found success around the rim with 11 of the 14 points in the frame coming in the paint. Duke shot 55 percent from the floor while holding the Irish to just 36 percent.
- The Blue Devils held Notre Dame over 20 points below its season scoring average but was unable to solve the Irish's defensive pressure in the 64-49 setback.

- Duke held Notre Dame to season lows in points (64) and field goals made (23).
- Duke kept the Fighting Irish 23 points below their average points per game. ND entered the matchup putting up 87.6 points.
- Notre Dame marks the 13th ACC opponent, and 21st foe overall, Duke has held below its respective scoring average.
- On the defensive end, Duke forced 19 Fighting Irish blunders while collecting eight steals and blocking seven shots.
- The Blue Devils doubled up Notre Dame in bench production, outscoring the Fighting Irish 18-9.
- Duke forced Notre Dame into a shot clock violation, pushing the Blue Devils' season total to 34 violations forced.
- Taina Mair notched her eighth double-figure scoring output of the season as she paced the Blue Devil offense with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. She scored nine of her points in the opening quarter on a 100-percent clip.
- Toby Fournier chipped in nine points, two rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
- Jadyn Donovan paced the rebounding efforts with seven boards while also matching a career high with four rejections.
- Delaney Thomas tied a career high three steals and added five points and four caroms as well. Thomas has collected three steals eight times this season.
