DURHAM, N.C. – Duke picked up another set of weekly honors with attackman
Eric Malever and short-stick midfielder
Aidan Maguire garnering USILA Team of the Week honors for their efforts in the 11-7 win over No. 7 Syracuse.
Malever led the offense with five goals against the Orange while Maguire helped anchor a superb defensive effort while scoring two goals and two assists.
Malever sparked Duke's fast start with two of the team's three goals in the first quarter. Both markers were unassisted as the graduate student attackman got to five-on-five and beat the Syracuse goaltender.
After Syracuse had pulled within one, 5-4, late in the second quarter, Malever jumped into action again with consecutive goals to give Duke the 7-4 advantage at halftime. He capped Duke's scoring in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach at 11-4.
The five goals tied his career high and marked his third hat trick this season and fifth game this season with at least five points. Malever leads all scorers this season with a career-best 56 points from 29 goals and 27 assists.
A leader on Duke's rope unit, Maguire helped spark the Blue Devil offense as well, scoring in transition in the second quarter and then again to start the third period. He also dished out a pair of assists in the second half as Duke stretched its lead to 11-4.
The short-stick defensive midfielder also picked up two ground balls while helping hold Syracuse to just seven goals – tied for its fewest all season.
Maguire has 24 caused turnovers this season – the most by a defensive midfielder in Duke single-season history and two shy of tying for fifth in the NCAA single-season record book. He has 49 caused turnovers for his career, ranking 10th in Blue Devil lore.
The ninth-ranked Blue Devils close their regular season Saturday, April 26 at Virginia. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m., on ACC Network.
