BOSTON, Mass. – Duke junior
Max Sloat registered a hat trick, and eight different players scored a goal to lead the 12th-ranked Blue Devils to a 12-7 victory at No. 16 Boston University Saturday afternoon.
Duke (9-3) used a stalwart defensive performance and an efficient offensive outing to end a two-game losing skid. The Blue Devils held the Terriers (8-3) to three extended scoring droughts in the first three quarters and dominated the faceoff game at 15-of-22 from the dot.
Aidan Maguire, a Hingham, Massachusetts native, had a career day with two goals, eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Eric Malever finished his afternoon with two goals and two assists for four points.
How it Happened
- Sloat opened the scoring for the Blue Devils as Charlie Johnson found the junior midfielder on the clear. Sloat saw the opening and ripped a shot past Will Barnes for the 1-0 lead.
- With Duke's defense stifling the Terriers' offense, Benn Johnston doubled the lead on an extra-man strike inside the left post.
- Turnovers continued to hamper Duke in the opening quarter and Boston University took advantage with two goals in the final 1:15. The first came on extra-man and the second with one second remaining in the period to even the score at two apiece.
- After not scoring for over 13 minutes, Duke scored four times in 1:56. Malever notched the first on the doorstep with the assist from Jack Pappendick. Luke Engelke benefited from a gritty ground ball from Jack Gray, scoring in transition off the faceoff and Graham Blake's roll dodge and shot inside the near post put Duke up 5-2 with 8:44 left in the frame.
- Duke continued to fire on all cylinders as Malever threw in a behind-the-back goal, extending the Blue Devils' lead to 6-2. Maguire capped the run two minutes later with another transition score before the Terriers snuck in a goal with 12 seconds left to make it 7-3 at halftime.
- The Blue Devils were outstanding defensively in the second quarter, holding the Terriers without a goal for 14:48 and to just six shots in the period. Duke forced BU into seven turnovers in the stanza and won five of seven faceoffs.
- BU scored the first goal of the third, but Sloat answered with two seven minutes apart to keep Duke in front by five, 9-4, late in the quarter. Liam McLane wrapped up the scoring for the Blue Devils putting away a McAdorey pass to send Duke into the fourth with a 10-4 lead.
- The Terriers outscored Duke, 3-2, in the final period with the Blue Devils' goals coming from Pappendick and Maguire.
- Patrick Jameison made 10 saves in the goal for Duke while Barnes had eight stops for the Terriers.
- Duke edged BU in the ground ball battle, 37-34, and went just 2-of-6 on extra man for the day. The Blue Devils held the Terriers' extra-man unit below its season average at 1-of-2.
