CORAL GABLES, Fla.– Duke women's soccer junior Mia Minestrella collected a goal in the 73rd minute to propel the second-ranked Blue Devils to a 1-0 victory on the road at Miami on Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium in Coral Gables.
The Blue Devil defense collected their fifth shutout of the season and Duke improved to 6-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in ACC action.
How It Happened
Duke came out and attempted the first shot of the match by Florida product Carina Lageyre, which was blocked.
After Miami took its lone shot of the first half, the Blue Devils controlled action the rest of way.
In the 30th minute, senior Farrah Walters had a shot blocked and then freshman Avery Oder sent a cross in front to junior Mia Minestrella, who's shot was saved.
Shortly after Oder unleashed a blast from the top of the box that was heading to the top right corner of the goal, but Miami keeper Emily Bredek was able to get a hand on it and make the save.
Late in the first half, sophomore Sophia Recupero was fouled just outside the box and redshirt sophomore Lauren Martinho attempted a free ticket that was saved.
Duke held a 6-1 advantage in shots in the first half with Minestrella leading the way with two.
The Blue Devils continued to dominate action in the second half.Duke took the first seven shots of the half, but couldn't get anything across.
At the 72:27 mark, Duke was able to get on the board.Redshirt freshman Lauren Martinho served in a corner kick to the head of a leaping Cameron Roller.A product of Sherman, Texas, Roller headed the ball to Minestrella, who used the side of her right foot to finish the eventual game-winner for the Blue Devils inside the near post.
Duke nearly doubled its lead at the 82:36 mark as freshman Jocelyn Travers drove into the box and used her left foot to blast an attempt that went off the crossbar.
Miami attempted three shots late in the match, which were all saved by Duke goalkeeper Caroline Dysart.
The Blue Devils finished the match with a 15-4 shot advantage with Minestrella taking a team-high five.
Notes
Mia Minestrella registered her third game-winning goal of the season and the fifth of her career. Minestrella now owns six goals on the season and 18 for her career.
Minestrella now owns six career goals against ACC opponents and two this season.
