RICHMOND, Va. – Three different Blue Devils scored goals and seventh-ranked Duke held VCU to just two shots to earn a 3-0 victory over the Rams in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field.
Ashley Stockdale,
Alaina McVeigh and
Madison Beach all scored for the Blue Devils, while
Kaiya Chepow made two saves to secure her third shutout of the year. Duke improves to 6-3 overall while VCU drops to 6-3.
How it Happened
- For the sixth time this season, the Blue Devils grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter. The shot was the first of the afternoon for Duke as Julia Boehringer sent a pass into the penalty circle from left sideline. Stockdale was there on the near post to get her stick down for the redirect past VCU goalie Emma Clements.
- Duke held much of the possession in the first half but managed only four shots against the Rams. VCU, entering the game having scored four goals in each of its previous two games, could not figure out the Blue Devils' defense in the first 30 minutes as Duke held the Rams to two shots and no penalty corners.
- Chepow answered when called to action, knocking both chances away to head into halftime with the shutout still alive.
- McVeigh extended Duke's lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute as the Blue Devils used their high press to force a Rams turnover in their defensive third. Massey collected the loose ball and slipped it to McVeigh for the easy put away by the veteran.
- Duke looked to stretch the advantage to three early in the fourth quarter with consecutive penalty corners. The Rams' defensive penalty corner unit stood tall to keep the lead at two with 11 minutes to play.
- Two minutes later, Beach put the game out of reach for the Blue Devils finishing her shot after Clements tried to kick the ball away from danger.
- Chepow finished the game with two saves as Duke held the Rams to only two shots and no penalty corners. Clements also had two stops for the Rams.
- Duke outshot VCU, 9-2, and earned five penalty corners.
Notes
- Duke posted its fourth shutout of the season with Kaiya Chepow getting her third career clean sheet.
- The Blue Devils held VCU without a penalty corner – the second time this season Duke has held an opponent without a corner.
- Alaina McVeigh's goal gave her 80 career points – one of 18 Blue Devils to reach the benchmark. The tally moves her one shy of tying for 14th all-time in Duke history.
- Julia Boehringer registered at least one point in her sixth game this season. She now has five goals and three assists for 13 points – 10 more points than she had in 20 games as a freshman.
- Sunday's victory gives head coach Pam Bustin 343 career wins, leaving her one shy of tying for 13th all-time among Division I head coaches.
- The two shots by VCU are second fewest by a Duke opponent this season and mark the seventh time the Blue Devils have held a foe to single-digit shots.
