DURHAM, N.C. – It was an eventful weekend for Duke women's basketball as the Blue Devils hosted their first fan-engagement event of the 2025-26 season Saturday morning, a tailgate for their season ticket holders, prior to Duke football's noon kickoff against No. 11 Illinois.
Duke players and coaches enjoyed some good vibes, food, and beautiful weather while mingling with the diehard and loyal Duke women's basketball supporters. The excitement level for the upcoming season continues to grow at a rapid pace.
"We've been season ticket holders for about three or four years now," said Mike and Sally Hunnicutt. "Coach Lawson, she's awesome; listening to her speak, hearing her philosophy, and watching the way the team plays – we love all of it."
While some of the tailgate attendees have supported the Blue Devils for more than two decades, the recent success of the women's basketball team has also welcomed an influx of new season ticket holders who want to pass on their love and admiration for the game.
"We became season ticket holders because of the youth, and just wanting to really pour into the next generation," said Lauren Leggett. Leggett and her parents, John and Shelley Slusser
, have been attending Duke football and basketball games for years, but the 2025-26 campaign will mark their first year as women's basketball season ticket holders. "There's nothing like the Cameron Indoor Stadium experience," said John Slusser. "I graduated from here in '81 and I also got to watch my granddaughter play there in the [
Kara Lawson] basketball camp recently, too. It was very special to see her play in Cameron…and her name is Cameron [laughs]."
For Kristen (Dean) Lowman, a 2003 Duke graduate who is a first-year season ticket holder, the decision to go all-in on season tickets was an obvious one for the women's basketball aficionado.
"This is our first year as Duke women's basketball season ticket holders. We just love the growth and the energy of the women's basketball team that we've seen over the past couple of years. Our daughter attended the second session of the first
Kara Lawson Basketball Camp. She had a wonderful time, so we said 'Yes, let's go all in!' We bought courtside season tickets. We are thrilled!"
The reigning 2025 Ally ACC Tournament Champions were also recognized for their title during the second quarter of the Duke football game. After finishing the regular season ACC slate with a 14-4 record, the Blue Devils took down Louisville, Notre Dame, and NC State en route to capturing their first ACC Tournament title since 2013 and their ninth overall.
