Bill Hillier, Jr., who oversees the Blue Devil pitching staff and assists with recruiting, is in his sixth season with the Duke baseball program as assistant coach.
Before coming to Duke, Hillier served as a volunteer assistant baseball coach at Wake Forest University from 1998-99. At Wake Forest, Hillier's primary duties included working with the Demon Deacon outfielders and catchers.
Hillier also was the head coach of the Asheboro Copperheads in the Coastal Plain League in the summer of 1998. He served as the head coach of the CPL West All-Star team that summer.
Hillier graduated from UNC Asheville with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1998. While at UNC Asheville, Hillier starred both on the mound and at the plate for the Bulldogs. He earned first team All-Big South honors as a junior and was a second-team All-Big South selection as a senior.
Hillier played his freshman season at North Carolina State in 1994 before transferring to UNC Asheville.
A native of Durham, Hillier was a two-time All-State selection at Jordan High School and also earned honorable mention All-America honors from USA Today. After batting .549 with three home runs and posting a 12-2 record and 0.49 ERA with 149 strikeouts in 103 innings, Hillier was named Piedmont 4-A Conference Player of the Year as a high school senior.
Hillier resides in Hillsborough with his wife, Kelly, and their three-year-old son, William C. Hillier, III, nicknamed "3," and their infant son, born in December.
