Jose Fonseca joined the Duke Athletics staff in 2004 and has been the Head Men’s Basketball Athletic Trainer since joining. In 2024, he was also appointed Associate Director of Athletic Medicine.
Prior to Duke, Fonseca was involved in a similar capacity at the University of Nebraska for two seasons, where he contributed to both the men's basketball program and the nationally-ranked football team. Before his tenure at Nebraska, he served as the athletic trainer for the men’s basketball and baseball teams at East Tennessee State University from 1999 to 2002.
Fonseca completed his undergraduate studies at The Pennsylvania State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science, with a focus on athletic training, in 1997. He went on to obtain a master’s degree in Kinesiology in 1999. Since becoming NATABOC certified in 1997, Fonseca has actively engaged in the academic side of his profession, presenting at multiple conferences and symposiums. His research contributions include a publication in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy regarding the effects of lateral ankle sprains.
Jose is married to Janna Cinnamon from Omaha, Nebraska. They have a son, Pedro “Pete,” and a daughter, Alexis “Lexi.”
