
Atas and Stokke Advance in Doubles Competition at Southern Intercollegiates

Athens, Ga. - Joey Atas and Jonathan Stokke advanced to the semifinals in the doubles bracket at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga. on Sunday with an 8-4 victory in the quarterfinals round.
Atas and Stokke moved on to the quarterfinals after a default win in the second round againt the duo of Cameron and Hensel of Tennessee. The duo then defeated the top seeded North and Rajevic of Georgia Tech to move on. The semifinal round will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. Atas and Stokke will face Florida State's Chang and Sucupira. The championship match will take place later in the day.
Ned Samuelson who defeated the Citadel's Danny Dossetor 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday in the consolation bracket, won another match today. He faced Rodrigo Santos of Winthrop in the morning and came away with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6) win to improve to 2-1 in singles competition this year.
Stokke was also in action in singles competition today. Stokke, ranked No. 53 in the ITA rankings, faced Georgia's John Isner in the quarterfinal round this morning and fell in straight sets. Isner won the first set 7-6 and then closed out the match with a 6-4 win to eliminate Stokke. Isner went on to win his semifinal match against Bram ten Berge of Ole Miss 6-2, 6-3. He will face another Rebel in the finals on Monday, going up against Eric Claesson at 10:30 a.m.
Christoher Brown was also still alive in the quarterfinals of the Division II singles bracket at the start of the day. After three straight wins to start the season he suffered his first setback with a loss in three sets to Zach Rath of Georgia Tech. Brown lost the first set 3-6, but came back to force a deciding set with a 6-3 win. However, he could not keep the momentum going, falling in the final set 6-3 to fall to 3-1 on the season in singles competition.
The tournament is being held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex and is hosted by the University of Georgia. The final rounds of the singles and doubles competition will be held on Monday.
