DURHAM, N.C. --
The men's and women's Duke cross country teams are now 1-0 for the 2005 season after winning a dual meet against North Carolina Central Wednesday. The 4K race was held on the Fit Loop in the Duke Forest, and both Blue Devil teams compiled 21 points to defeat the Eagles who had 34.
Junior Lindsay Owen and freshman Katie Simon paired up to take second place in the women's race, finishing two seconds behind NC Central's Aisha Brown, who won in 17:25. Senior Jen Fraser and freshman Caitlin Klaas rounded out a block of Duke runners who placed in four of the top five slots, tying for fourth place with a time of 17:53. Sophomore Allison Stankavage finished seventh in 18:38.
As in the women's race, the Duke men placed four of its five runners in the top five spots. Junior Dan Daly controlled the race, finishing nearly half a minute before the two runner-ups. Daly crossed the finish line at 12:27 and was followed by NC Central's Rashaad Lee and Duke's Alex Reinhart, who both came in at 12:54. Junior Marco Salmen and sophomore Mark Buha ran a close fourth and fifth with times of 13:01 and 13:03, respectively. Freshman Sean McDermott finished his first collegiate race in 14:02.
The first-place finish was Daly's first since last year's Nike Race of Champions last October at the Great American Cross Country Festival, when he ran a 26:02 8K..
The Duke cross country team will take a two-day break before hitting the road Saturday. The men's team travels to the University of Virginia for the Lou Onesty Invitational, while the women's team will compete in the San Diego Invitational in California.
