DURHAM, N.C. ? Sophomore Clark Klaasen and freshman Adam Long each fired one-under 71s on Monday to lead Duke to an even-par 288 in the final round of the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic at the Duke University Golf Club (7,105 yards, par-72). The Blue Devils closed the event third overall with a three-round score of 869 (+5, 297-284-288) with Coastal Carolina capturing the tournament title with an impressive 13-under 851 (288-282-281). North Carolina finished second overall with an even-par 864 (286-288-290).
Klaasen, coming off a career tournament low round of 67 in the second round on Sunday, carded four birdies, three bogeys and 11 pars en route to his 71. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native finished the tournament in third place with a four-under 212 (74-67-71). Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson won the event for the second year in a row with a nine-under 207 (69-68-70). North Carolina's David Holzworth was second overall with an eight-under 208 (70-68-70).
Long opened play on Monday with nine straight pars before carding a birdie on No. 10. He bogeyed No. 12 to fall back to even before another birdie on No. 13 and five pars to close the round with a one-under 71. Long, the top-ranked player in the Golfweek ratings entering the tournament, finished tied for 25th overall with a five-over 221 (77-73-71). Senior Jake Grodzinsky recorded a top-20 finish by shooting an even-par 72 for the second straight round. The Cornville, Ariz., native fired a four-over 220 (76-72-72) for the event to finish tied for 20th overall.
Junior Michael Quagliano had a 77 on Monday and finished tied for 28th overall with a six-over 222 (73-72-77). Michael Schachner shot a 35-39=74 (+2) in the final round and wound up tied for 34th in the tournament with a seven-over 223. Freshman Jeff Edelman, competing as an individual, shot a four-over 76 in the final round to finish tied for 43rd with a nine-over 225.
Sophomores Justin Hare and Andrew Giuliani also competed as individuals shooting 75 and 79 on Monday. Hare finished the event tied for 60th with an 81-74-75=230, while Giuliani was tied for 68th with an 83-71-79=233.
Duke returns to action Oct. 22-24 when it competes in the Isleworth Invitational at the Isleworth Country Club in Windermere, Fla.
