Durham, N.C. - The Duke men's fencing team posted a record of 2-3 on the first day of the Duke Invitational in Card Gymnasium. The Blue Devils defeated MIT and Cleveland State but fell to North Carolina, Brandeis and Johns Hopkins.
The tenth-ranked men were led by the saber team which finished 4-1 on the day and earned the Saber Cup for the most wins in the tournament (30). They were paced by freshman Peter Truszkowski who ended the day with a record of 13-2. John Cornwell was also strong, winning at least two bouts in four of the five duals. He finished with a 10-5 mark. The other two fencer to compete in saber were Michael DiMarco, who finished 6-6, and Laughlin Stewart with a 1-2 record.
The epee squad won three of their matches on the day. Nic Testerman was in double-digit wins on the day with a 10-4 record to lead the way. Zach Moss was next with a record of 7-6. Theodore Lauzen and Sam Doran each posted three victories. Lauzen ended with a 3-7 record while Doran was 3-2. In his first collegiate action, Sean Bani went 0-3. North Carolina picked up the Epee Cup with 33 total victories.
The foil team earned a win over Cleveland State. Jackson McClam was the top fencer for the foil team with a record of 7-8. Cameron Virkus posted an even 4-4 mark. Raymond Fan and Brian Robinson each saw their first action of the season. Fan ended the day 3-9 while Robinson was 0-10. Brandeis took the Foil Cup with 31 victories on the day.
The Duke Invitational will continue on Saturday when the women compete. The Blue Devils will be joined by MIT, North Carolina, Brandeis, Johns Hopkins and Temple. The action will begin at 8 a.m. in Card Gymnasium.
