COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Four Duke women -- sophomore Danielle Spearman and seniors Nora Stupp, Katie Ness and Julia Lewis combined to set a Duke record in the 200 medley relay Wednesday, wrapping up the first day of the ACC Swimming & Diving Championships. The foursome swam a 1:44.54 to edge the previous record of 1:44.67. After two events, Duke sits in a tie for seventh place out of the 11 competing teams.
Before the record-setting performance, the Blue Devils trounced their season-best 800 freestyle relay time by over three seconds to open the meet, finishing in 7:33.68 and ninth place. Spearman gave Duke a run for eighth place in the third leg, pulling within inches of Georgia Tech. Swimming the anchor position, Ness was just barely touched out by the Yellow Jackets as they finished in eighth, 7:33.25, and Duke came in ninth, 7:33.68. Five teams -- Virginia, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina and Maryland -- notched NCAA provisional times in the competitive event, which Virginia won in 7:16.72.
The 200 medley followed, and Duke captured second in the first heat, finishing eighth overall and setting a school record in that event at the ACC Championships for the second straight year. Lewis anchored the performance by swimming a career-best 23.47 50 freestyle. Florida State won the event with a meet record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:38.59, while the next four teams -- Virginia, Maryland, Virginia Tech and North Carolina earned provisional marks.
