Swimming & Diving Teams Defeat Davidson

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams began their second portion of the 2006-07 season on Saturday with wins over Davidson, as the men defeated the Wildcats, 166.5-127.5 and the women were victorious by a score of 198-90, at the Blue Devils' own Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion.
The Blue Devil men's squad falls even at 3-3 (1-2 ACC) with today's victory. Duke took first place in the first six of seven events in the pool, and the Blue Devil divers then made it seven out of eight, as they would dominate on the 1-meter board, taking first and second place. The divers would repeat that performance on the 3-meter board later on.
Senior Kevin Arthofer proved to be back in full force after spending much of the fall semester recovering from injuries, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke (58.54). Junior Scott Champagne posted three victories on the day, touching first in the 200 freestyle (1:45.14), the 200 backstroke (1:55.10) and the 400 IM (4:06.96). His times in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke events were personal bests.
The Duke women's squad improved to 4-2 (1-2 ACC) with today's win. The Blue Devils started off strong, as they took first, second and third in the 400 medley relay. Next, freshman Jackie Fasano dominated the competition to place first in the 1650 freestyle, and Duke would then take first and second in four consecutive events. The Duke divers came up huge on the day, placing first, second and third on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
Senior Jackie Rodriguez won three events and posted a split of 1:04.90 on Duke's winning 400 medley relay team. Rodriguez won the 200 freestyle (1:55.41), 500 freestyle (5:04.90) and 400 individual medley (4:32.65) events, although her 500 free and 400 IM times were not scored. Julie Brummond was a double winner, taking first on the 1- and 3-meter boards with scores of 267.53 and 266.25, respectively.
The Davidson men's team falls to 4-2 (3-0 CAA), while the women fall to 2-5 (1-2 CAA).
“The first meet of the spring semester is always an interesting one, said Duke head coach Dan Colella. “Last year we were really flat coming off our holiday training trip and this year the team really responded well. I think it shows what they've been doing as far as training goes. It's really starting to come together and we're seeing some great performances out there. I feel very good about the weeks to come and we feel that as the team rests and recovers, we should continue to see improvement as we go into ACCs.”
Duke will next travel to Charlottesville, Va., to take on nationally ranked Virginia. The Blue Devils will be in action at home once more this season, as they host East Carolina on Jan. 27 at 1 p.m.
NOTE: Some times are off on the results PDF, specifically with the 200 backstroke event. The times are in order but Duke's order of finish should be Spearman (1st), Aristeo, Frizzell, Bellew, Holt and Toney.
