A Look Back At the Paradise Jam...

The Blue Devils hit only 38.5 percent from the field, 22.9 percent from three-point land and 46.9 percent from the free throw line. The Blue Devil defense held strong holding opponents to 56.0 points a game and 38.5 percent shooting.
Leading the way for Duke was junior center Chante Black, who was named to the All-Tournament team. She averaged 13.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 1.3 steals. Black scored double-figures in all three games, while also totaling a double-double against Purdue with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Freshman Jasmine Thomas also played well averaging 10.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 blocks. She scored a season-best 15 points versus Purdue and 11 against Temple in the first two contests. Thomas hit a career-best 2-of-4 treys against Purdue as well.
Last Meeting With Vanderbilt...
Fourth-ranked Duke improved to 8-0 on the season as the Blue Devils downed 11th-ranked Vanderbilt, 69-48, on Dec. 7, 2006.
Duke received a game-high 16 points, nine rebounds and five blocks in 35 minutes from Alison Bales, while Abby Waner added 14 points, Lindsey Harding had 15 and Wanisha Smith chipped in a season-high 13 points.
Carla Thomas had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Vanderbilt (8-1). Dee Davis chipped in 12. Vanderbilt's Caroline Williams averaged 15.6 points going into the game but was held to six by Duke.
With 4:18 left, an intentional foul on Williams and technical called on Vanderbilt's bench sparked eight straight points for Duke that sealed the win. Bales and Carrem Gay each grabbed nine boards to help Duke dominate inside with a 41-26 advantage in rebounds.
Bales went 5-for-7 from the paint in scoring 11 points in the first half, which ended with Duke leading 29-22. Vanderbilt was within 49-40 after two free throws by Thomas with 5:53 to play. After misses by both teams, Williams fouled Waner as the Blue Devil guard fed Smith for a wide-open layup with 4:18 to play.
Before the ensuing two free throws, referee Joe Cunningham called a technical on Vanderbilt's bench. Harding knocked down two free throws on the technical, and Waner hit one of two free throws off the intentional foul. Eleven seconds later, Waner drained a three-pointer to put Duke up 57-40.
Duke made 10 straight free throws in the final 3:10 to help ice the win. Vanderbilt missed its final eight shots. Both teams pounded the ball inside. Duke's 21-12 advantage in first-half rebounds resulted in 11 second-chance points.
Life On The Road...
The Blue Devils will play their fourth straight road contest when they hit the court at Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Duke will also play its sixth road game out of seven total contests this season.
Duke is in the middle of a five-game road swing as the Blue Devils will travel to Penn State on Sunday, Dec. 2. The schedule is one of, if not the most, demanding schedules Duke has faced over the last number of years with quick turnarounds, travel and tough opponents.
Former High School Teammates Go Against Each Other...
Former AAU teammates from the Colorado Hoopsters -- Abby Waner (Duke), Emily Waner (Duke) and Liz Sherwood (Vanderbilt) -- will all hit the floor on Wednesday in Nashville, Tenn. The trio played for the Hoopsters together since seventh grade, while both families were very good friends as the teammates grew up.
Sherwood transferred to Highlands Ranch H.S. as a sophomore and played against the Waners at ThunderRidge. Emily's team downed Sherwood's in Emily's senior year for the first time.
Free Throw Woes...
Duke continues to struggle at the free throw line this season as the Blue Devils are hitting only 56.4 percent. Only Chante Black (75.9) and Abby Waner (75.0) are hitting above 70.0 percent from the charity stripe. The Blue Devils are generally very good shooting free throws as Duke has shot over 70.0 percent for nine straight years. The last time Duke shot below that mark was in 1997-98 as it hit 68.9 percent.
