CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke men's swimming team sits in ninth place after day two of the 2007 ACC Championships, as the Blue Devils competed in six events and set numerous season-best times on Thursday at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Freshman Tim McKeever competed in the 500 freestyle bonus finals and touched in 4:37.38. In preliminary action, McKeever finished in 4:34.79, as he set Duke season-bests and personal-bests twice in one day. Classmate Andrew Clark also achieved a personal best in the 500 free event, finishing in 4:40.23. All three of those Duke 500 free times beat the previous best times swam throughout the regular season.
In the 200 individual medley preliminaries, five Duke men surpassed the team-best mark, as senior Jacob McCafferty touched in 1:53.63 as the top Blue Devil finisher and junior Scott Champagne finished in 1:54.98, surpassing his previous team-best mark of 1:56.18.
Freshman David Carlson was the top Duke finisher in the 50 freestyle prelims, finishing in 21.35 seconds for yet another Duke season-best. Sophomore Andy Ward touched in 21.51 seconds for a personal-best and a second-best Duke time for the season, while freshman Murillo Adrados also had a good showing, touching in 21.66 seconds, as once again three Blue Devil men topped the team's previous top time for the event.
The Duke 200 freestyle medley team of Carlson, classmate David Hahn, Ward and McCafferty notched a season-best time of 1:24.34 by over two seconds, to contribute 14 points to Duke's team score. Carlson's leadoff split of 21.25 seconds beat a season- and personal-best set earlier in the 50 free event.
“Everybody who swam today went season-best and we had a number of lifetime-bests,” said head coach Dan Colella. “The events of this first day are probably our weakest of the three days, in terms of getting people in the finals. Tomorrow we have a good chance of having four or five or six guys getting back at night which will be big for us. The energy is high and everyone is doing well and feeling good. We've knocked off a lot of time in a lot of areas and we always want to be better, but I think with our showing today we had some solid performances and it's a good indicator of the next two days to come.”
After beginning the day in eighth place, Duke finished day two of ACC Championship action in ninth place with 62 points. Florida State is in first place with 257 points, while Virginia (205.5) and Virginia Tech (178) round out the top three.
The 2007 ACC Men's Swimming Championships will be held on Feb. 21-24, with preliminaries starting each day at 11 a.m., and finals set to begin at 7 p.m. Exclusive coverage of the ACC Men's Swimming Championship will be available on www.ACCSelect.com for fans to watch live at 7 p.m. ET through the final day of action.
