CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke men's swimming team sits in ninth place after day three of the 2007 ACC Championships, as the Blue Devils continued to establish personal and season-bests on Friday at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
In the 100 breaststroke consolation finals, senior Kevin Arthofer touched in 56.13 seconds to take 10th place and best his own school record. Arthofer topped his previous best by .01 seconds, as he contributed seven points to the Blue Devils' team score.
Junior Scott Champagne and senior Jay Ashenfelter were in action in the 400 individual medley bonus finals, as Champagne touched in 4:01.93 and Ashenfelter finished in 4:10.46. Champagne's time set a personal-best for the junior, as he leads the Blue Devils in the 400 IM for the year, while Ashenfelter touched in 4:07.89 in preliminary action to post a personal season-best. Freshman Tim McKeever also set a personal-best in the 400 IM event, touching in 4:08.97 in prelims.
Senior Jacob McCafferty set a personal-best in the 100 butterfly preliminaries, finishing in 50.52 seconds. That time was a Duke season-best. Freshman Eric Ness also set a personal-best in the 100 fly event, touching in 51.06 in preliminary action.
Junior Matt Rinehart set a Duke season-best in the 200 freestyle preliminaries, touching in 1:43.76. Freshman Sean Smith set a personal-best in the 200 free prelims, finishing in 1:44.23.
Sophomore Jordan Charles (58.26) and freshmen David Carlson (58.27) and Colton Lynner (1:01.01) competed in the 100 breast bonus finals.
Freshman David Hahn was in action in the 100 backstroke bonus finals, as he finished in a career-best and Duke season-best 51.96 seconds. Classmate Murillo Adrados also competed in the 100 back bonus finals, finishing in 52.02 seconds. Adrados posted a career-best time of 51.57 seconds earlier in the day during preliminaries.
The Blue Devil 400 medley relay team of Hahn, Arthofer, McCafferty and Carlson recorded a Duke season-best time of 3:23.81 to place eighth and contribute 22 points to Duke's team score. Hahn posted a leadoff split of 51.49 seconds to establish a new 100 backstroke personal-best for the third time in one day.
Duke finished day three of ACC Championship action in ninth place with 97 points. Florida State is in first place with 500 points, while Virginia (412.5) and host North Carolina (353.5) round out the top three.
The 2007 ACC Men's Swimming Championships will be held on Feb. 21-24, with preliminaries starting each day at 11 a.m., and finals set to begin at 7 p.m. Exclusive coverage of the ACC Men's Swimming Championship will be available on www.ACCSelect.com for fans to watch live at 7 p.m. ET through the final day of action.
