Duke men's golf used two-under par rounds of 70 from senior Jake Grodzinsky and junior Michael Schachner enroute to a four under team total of 284 on day one of the Puerto Rico Classic. Playing the 6,902-yard River Course at Rio Mar Country Club, Duke also saw sophomore Clark Klaasen shoot one-under 71 and freshman Adam Long post a one-over 73 for its team total.
"I was very proud of our effort today, and I know Coach (Rod) Myers would have been too," said interim head coach Brad Sparling. "We all played well under tough conditions. We have been working very hard on being more consistent as a team. To have all five guys in the scoring mix was nice to see today."
Freshman Jeff Edelman fired a three-over 75, but was two under through his first nine holes before hitting a rough stretch of holes on his second nine.
Grodzinsky and Schachner are tied for 13th place, while Klaasen is tied for 24th. Long is tied for 44th, and Edelman is tied for 59th.
East Tennessee State used rounds of 65 each by Rhys Davies and Cian McNamara to post a 15-under par score of 273 to lead day one. Georgia is second at nine-under 279, while Stanford is third at seven-under 281. Oklahoma State is fourth at sixth-under 283, while Clemson is fifth at five-under 283. Duke and Alabama are tied for sixth at 284, with Georgia Tech and Kent State tied for eighth at one-under 287. Minnesota and Texas are tied for 10th at even par 288. The event has 18 teams in the field, with N.C. State tied for 16th at +9, 297.
The 21st-ranked Blue Devils started on holes 9-12 in the shotgun start, playing with Northestern and N.C. State.
The event features the top six teams in the nation and 12 teams in the top 25.
Duke will tee off on Monday in round two at 7:00 a.m. Eastern.
