CLEMSON, S.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams fell to Clemson on Saturday at McHugh Natatorium, as the Duke men were defeated 170-121 and the Blue Devil women fell by a score of 174-126.
Senior Jackie Rodriguez had a stellar day, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 1:06.39, and also placing first in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.55). Freshman Meredith Bannon took second in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 1:06.87, for a Blue Devil one-two punch. Duke also took first and second places in the 200 butterfly, as freshman Shannon Beall took first in 2:05.32 and classmate Elizabeth Bellew took second in 2:07.58. Beall was a double-event winner, also placing first in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 57.39.
Junior Danielle Spearman recorded a victory, touching first in the 200 backstroke (2:05.86). On the diving board, freshman Julie Brummond placed first on the 1-meter board with a score of 265.05.
On the men's side, senior Kevin Arthofer was a double-winner, posting a victory in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 59.01, and in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.46. Freshman Eric Winnard took first on the 1-meter board, posting a score of 287.02.
The Duke women finish the regular season with an overall record of 5-4 (1-4 ACC), while the Blue Devil men end the regular season at 4-5 (1-4 ACC).
Next, Duke will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the ACC Championships. The women's championships will be held Feb. 14-17 while the men's championships will be held Feb. 21-24, with both taking place at the University of North Carolina's Maurice Jay Koury Natatorium. The ACC Diving Championships will be held at Duke's own Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion on Feb. 17.
