DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke University sophomore Amanda Blumenherst continued her hot streak on Friday at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic as the reigning National Player of the Year carded a four-under-par, 68, on her way to a one-stroke lead after day one at the 6,424-yard, Par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
Blumenherst, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., has now posted eight straight rounds of even or under par, while not trailing at the end of each of the eight rounds this spring. She owns a one-stroke lead over Vanderbilt's Jacqui Concolino (69) with 36 holes remaining at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic.
After opening the round with her only bogey of the day, Blumenherst got her score back to even par with a birdie on the par-three fifth hole and then made the turn at even par, 36. On the back nine is where Blumenherst, who is the top-ranked golfer in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, slid into a zone where she birdied four out of seven holes during a stretch to notch a 32 on the back nine. She now has registered 11 even or under par rounds out of 16 this year.
In the team standings, Vanderbilt leads with a six-over-par 294 followed by Duke (298), Tennessee (298), Auburn (299), North Carolina (299), Alabama (301), Louisville (306), Louisiana State (307), North Carolina State (308) and College of Charleston (309) in the top 10.
Other Blue Devil results on the day include Anna Grzebien (74), Jennie Lee (78), Alison Whitaker (78) and Jennifer Pandolfi (83). Grzebien is tied for 13th after totaling 16 pars and two bogeys in the round. A product of Narragansett, R.I., Grzebien closed her day with 13 straight pars after opening with three pars and two bogeys over the first five holes.
Both Whitaker and Lee are tied for 47th after round one. Whitaker, who is from Melbourne, Australia, opened her round at two-under-par through seven holes but a double-bogey on the par three eighth hole led to a rough final 10 holes. She concluded the back nine at five-over-par to finish with a 78. Lee, a product of Henderson, Nev., totaled a 39 on the front and back nine to total a 78. Pandolfi is tied for 82nd.
As a team, the Blue Devils posted nine birdies. Duke will tee off on Saturday beginning at 11:15 a.m. (ET) along with Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
