BATON ROUGE, LA. ? With a team-best even-par round of 288 on Saturday, the top-ranked Duke Women's Golf team moved into the lead at the 2007 LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic, while sophomore Amanda Blumenherst continued her excellent play leading the individual action as well with a seven-under-par, 137. The Blue Devils hold a three shot advantage with 18 holes remaining at the 6,424-yard, Par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
In the team standings, Duke owns a 36-hole total of 586 with Auburn (589), Vanderbilt (592), Tennessee (597), Alabama (599), Wake Forest (604), Louisville (605), North Carolina (605), South Carolina (607) and N.C. State (609) rounding out the top 10. The Blue Devils are vying for their second straight tournament victory in the spring as Duke notched an impressive 26-stroke victory at the UCF Challenge in the last tournament.
Saturday was no different for the long-hitting reigning National Player of the Year as Blumenherst once again only sufferered one bogey, while totaling four birdies and the rest pars. She made the turn with a one-under-par, 35, and then finished the day with two birdies, seven pars and a two-under-par, 34, to finish with a 69. Blumenherst (140) owns a three-stroke lead over Mississippi State's Amanda Mathis (140).
Blumenherst, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., has now posted nine straight rounds of even or under par, while not trailing at the end of each of the nine rounds this spring. She has registered 12 even or under par rounds out of 17 this year.
Collecting Duke's second best 18-hole ledger of the day was junior Jennifer Pandolfi, who registered a one-under-par, 71. This came a day after the Navarre, Fla., native struggled with no birdies and a score of 83. Saturday was a different story as Pandolfi collected four birdies, which came after suffering a double-bogey on the third hole of the day. She opened the morning with two pars, had a double-bogey on No. 3, but came back with a birdie on the fourth hole and four straight pars to make the turn with a 37. On the back nine, Pandolfi totaled birdies on No. 10 and No. 11 followed by two pars and one birdie to move to two-under-par through 14 holes. She closed with three pars and one bogey to post a 71. Overall, she is tied for 45th with a 154.
Senior Anna Grzebien registered her second straight solid round at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic with a 73, after totaling a 74 on Friday. A product of Narragansett, R.I., Grzebien had eight pars and one bogey over the first nine holes to make the turn at 37. On the back nine, she posted two birdies on No. 11 and No. 15 to go along with five pars and two bogeys on her way to shooting even par, 36. She is tied for 12th with a 147.
A native of Melbourne, Australia, Alison Whitaker had another up and down day for the Blue Devils as she finished with a 75 and is tied for 37th with a 153. The freshman made the turn at four-over-par, 40, but finished strong shooting a one-under-par, 35, on the back nine with three birdies. Her stellar score on the back nine included three birdies over the final six holes.
Jennie Lee came back from shooting a 78 on day one to posting a 75 on Saturday and is tied for 37th with a 153. Lee, who is from Henderson, Nev., totaled one birdie, four bogeys and 13 pars on the day.
As a team, the Blue Devils fired 15 birdies on the day. Duke will tee off on Sunday for the final round beginning at 9:00 a.m. (ET).
