Upcoming Event: Women's Golf versus Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on October 17, 2025

3/18/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
BATON ROUGE, LA. ? For the second straight week, both the Duke Women's Golf Team and sophomore Amanda Blumenherst took home the team and individual medalist crowns at the 2007 LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic on Sunday. As a team, Duke posted a 54-hole total of 872 to win by six strokes, while Blumenherst carded a nine-under-par, 207, to win by eight shots at the 6,424-yard, Par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
“We just feel like we are getting in our stride,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “There are still a few high-70 rounds that are sliding in there as we are definitely capable of doing better than that. The course was long, wet and was playing 6,400 yards. The team liked it because we were able to use our length as we have some fairly long players on the team. It is nice when we play a course that is long as it challenges that part of our game a little bit.”
For Blumenherst, who is a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., it was her third straight win, which is a new school record, and sixth of her career, which ranks tied for fourth along with LPGA member Brittany Lang, who won six titles in two years with the Blue Devils. Blumenherst has now posted 10 straight rounds of even or under par, while not trailing at the end of each of the 10 rounds this spring. She has registered 13 even or under par rounds out of 18 this year.
“I was hitting the ball well again this week and also making all the important putts,” said Blumenherst. “I didn't have any three-putts all week so that really helped out. There wasn't a whole bunch of trouble out on the course and it was pretty wide open. You still had to have precision iron shots and I was able to do that.”
Over the last three victories, Blumenherst has registered 54-hole totals of 205, 207 and 210, while posting a 69.11 stroke average. On Sunday, she started the way she did all weekend with early birdies on No. 3 and No. 7 before making a bogey on the ninth hole to make the turn at one-under-par, 35. On the back nine, Blumenherst moved her score to three-under-par with birdies on the 11th and 12th holes, while closing with five pars and a bogey on No. 18 to finish with a 70. She totaled rounds of 68, 69 and 70 over the weekend to post an eight-stroke victory over Nicole Hage (Auburn), Amanda Mathis (Mississippi State) and Marci Turner (Tennessee).
“Amanda has gotten some putts to start falling in,” said Brooks. “Her long game is so solid and has always been. What is going on now is putts are falling. She has the whole package now. It is great.”
The nine-under-par, 207, for Blumenherst was a University Club record with the previous mark of six-under-par held by former Duke All-America Leigh Anne Hardin at the 2002 NCAA Regional along with Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt. She was also the first player to ever go to double-figures under par on the back nine before suffering a bogey on the final hole.
Amanda's 9-under total is a University Club WOmen's record for 54 holes ... Previous mark was -6 by Leigh ANne Hardin of Duke in 2002 NCAA Regional and by Jacqui Concolino of Vanderbilt in winning the title last year...AManda was first player to ever go to double figures on the backside, but bogeyed 18 to go back to nine under.
In the team standings, Duke collected a six-stroke victory over Vanderbilt (878) with Auburn (879), Tennessee (892) and Alabama (899) rounding out the top five squads. For the weekend, the Blue Devils notched rounds of 298, 288 and a final day two-under-par ledger of 286. As a team, all five Blue Devils notched an under-par round at one time during the weekend.
“That is my favorite way to win a tournament,” said Brooks on all five golfers going under par at one point this weekend. “When everyone contributes it is great. I am thrilled with how everyone stepped up. It is fantastic.”
After opening the tournament with rounds of 78 and 75, Jennie Lee fired a two-under-par, 70, in the final round to finish with a 223, which was tied for 19th. A product of Henderson, Nev., Lee began her day on the second hole and played her first eight holes at even par with a bogey on No. 5 and a birdie on No. 9. On the back nine, Lee was very solid with eight straight pars until a birdie on the 379-yard, par four No. 18 followed by a birdie on the 369-par four first hole to finish with her round of 70.
“We finished second in a few tournaments last fall and to start the spring,” said Lee. “With these two victories against some good teams, it just shows everyone out there that we are still fighting hard and are a good team.”
Freshman Alison Whitaker also recorded an under-par 18 hole score on Sunday as she posted a one-under-par, 71, to finish tied for 21st with a 224. The Melbourne, Australia native had a solid round with one birdie and one bogey over her first eight holes as she also started on No. 2. Whitaker closed her final 10 holes with nine pars and a birdie on 490-yard, par five 17th hole.
Coming off a one-under-par, 71, on Saturday, junior Jennifer Pandolfi posted a 75 on the final day to finish tied for 43rd with a 229. She totaled 14 pars, one birdie, one double-bogey and two bogies on the day. Senior Anna Grzebien closed her weekend with a 77 on Sunday and was tied for 21st with a 224.
“To get two wins in a row has seemed to get the momentum back on our side,” said Grzebien. “I think people thought we were falling off a bit. It is fun out there to fight to the end and it is great to see so many good players out there now. It is so much more of a tough competition from hole one to the last hole. It makes it a lot more exciting, really.”
With the Blue Devils trying to hold off Vanderbilt at the end, Lee birdied her final two holes and Whitaker notched a birdie on No. 17 to give Duke a six stroke win.
“With those three shots at the end is what you really like to see,” said Brooks.”
For the weekend, Blumenherst totaled 13 of the Blue Devils' 37 birdies. Duke will next play in the Bryan National Collegiate on April 6-8 in Browns Summitt, N.C.
“We are really turning it around,” said Blumenherst. “We have been playing well all year, but a few things have come up where we haven't won, but it wasn't due to poor golf. Now we are putting everything together at the perfect time.”
