HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. ? The Duke men's golf team fired an opening round 289 and a second round 285 on Friday to move into third place at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate at Devils Ridge Golf Club (par-72, 6,854 yards). The Blue Devils will enter Saturday's final round eight shots behind first place Tulsa (566) and six shots back of Charlotte (568).
Junior Michael Schachner shot 72-70=142 (-2) on Friday to move into a tie for 12th overall, while Michael Quagliano returned from injury to shoot 71-72=143 (-1) to enter the final round tied for 15th. Quagliano has missed the previous three spring tournaments while nursing a back injury.
The Blue Devils also got solid play from senior Jake Grodzinsky who fired back-to-back 72s and is tied for 19th overall. Sophomore Clark Klaasen rebounded from an opening round 74 to shoot a one-under 71 in the second round. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native is tied for 22nd overall at one-over par (145).
Freshman Adam Long struggled on Friday en route to shooting 75-77=152. Duke's best round of the day came from freshman Jeff Edelman, who is playing the tournament as an individual. Edelman shot a 32-33=65 (-7) in the opening round to enter the second round tied for first. The Southlake, Texas, native followed up with a three-over 75 and enters Saturday's final round tied for fifth at four-under (140). Edelman is four shots back of tournament leaders Jonas EnanderHedin (Charlotte) and Mitch Cohlmia (Tulsa).
Duke opens final round action on Saturday at 9:24 a.m. and will be paired with Tulsa and Charlotte. Tulsa is ranked 16th in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, while Charlotte and Duke are ranked 24th and 25th respectively.
The Blue Devils won the Intercollegiate in 2005 when it was played at Devils Ridge Golf Club. Duke fired a 16-under 560 at the event with Schachner leading the way with an eight-under 136 (68-68) to finish tied for second. Grodzinsky shot 74-72=146 to finish tied for 33rd at the 2005 Intercollegiate.
