BROWNS SUMMITT, N.C. ? After not leading a tournament for the first time this spring on Friday, Duke sophomore Amanda Blumenherst moved to where she was comfortable on Saturday, tied for the lead, at the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summitt, N.C. Blumenherst fired a one-under-par round of 71, which included three birdies over her final four holes at the 6,386-yard, Par 72 Bryan Park Champions Course.
“The wind was blowing hard off the lake and it was just really nasty conditions out there today,” said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. “If you shot in the 70s today, you were lucky and got some breaks. If we would have had any putts fall today we would have a nice lead. Hopefully the putts will fall tomorrow.”
A product of Scottsdale, Ariz., Blumenherst now owns a two-day total of 144 and is tied with Purdue's Maria Hernandez for the individual lead.
As a team, the Blue Devils turned in a 301 on day two and owns a 36-hole total of 593. Florida leads the event by one stroke with a 592, after turning in a team-best 294 on Saturday. Rounding out the top 10 teams are Purdue (593), North Carolina (600), South Carolina (607), Georgia (613), Auburn (616), Tennessee (617), Virginia (619) and Ohio State (619).
Blumenherst collected five birdies on the afternoon and her seven birdies for the tournaments is tied for the most. After a birdie to open the day, she went on to bogey the next three holes. Blumenherst came back to par the next six straight holes before notching a birdie on the par-five 11th hole. She had a bogey on No. 14, but finished in stellar fashion with birdies on No. 15, 17 and 18 to finish with a 71.
“Amanda's round today was as good as she has had all year as she dealt with these nasty weather conditions,” said Brooks.
Senior Anna Grzebien had Duke's next best round of the day with a one-over-par, 73. A product of Narragansett, R.I., Grzebien is tied for ninth with a 147. She opened the round with two bogies and a double-bogey over the first five holes, but settled down to play the next 13 holes at two-under-par. Her 3.95 par four scoring average for the tournament is tied for the best so far through two rounds.
After posting a 72 on day one, junior Jennifer Pandolfi notched a 78 on Saturday and is tied for 17th with a 150. Jennie Lee also had a good round on Friday but had trouble with the cold weather on the second day with an 80. She is tied for 26th with a 153. Freshman Alison Whitaker is also tied for 26th with a 153 after notching rounds of 74 and 79.
The Blue Devils will tee off on Sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a shotgun start along with Purdue and North Carolina.
