DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke wrestling announced its team awards after their 7-9 record in their 2006-07 season. Most outstanding wrestler went to senior Daniel Shvartsman, outstanding freshman was given to Voris Tejada, outstanding held back freshman went to redshirt freshman John Barone, senior Patrick Keenum had the highest GPA, and sophomore Dan Fox was bestowed with the coaches' award.
Shvartsman, who wrestles at 149 pounds, had a 15-8 record this season. That included a 9-3 dual meet showing and a 6-3 ledger in ACC matches. He finished his career with 87 wins, good for ninth place on the all-time Duke list. Shvartsman placed third at the ACC Championships and was named to the NWCA All-Academic Team.
Tejada had Duke's best winning percentage this season with a 19-8 record. He was 15-7 in tournaments and had two pins. Tejada placed in the top five in all three tournaments he wrestled in. The native of Marlton, N.J., wrestled at 149 and 157 pounds for the Blue Devils this season.
Barone had the most wins (24) and falls (seven) on the season for Duke. He placed third at the ACC's, first in The Citadel Open and third in the UPenn Invitational, all at 174 pounds. Barone was 13-6 in tournaments, 11-5 in dual meets and 7-2 in the ACC.
Keenum finished his career by leading the Blue Devils to the NWCA All-Academic team award for the highest cumulative GPA in the NCAA. He was 6-10 at 197 pounds in dual meets in 2006-07.
At 184 pounds, Fox was 9-11 overall and 8-8 in tournament matches. He finished fifth at the UPenn Invitational and had three pins on the year.
The Blue Devils return eight of 10 starters for the 2007-08 season, losing only Keenum, Shvartsman and 141-pound Philip Wightman to graduation.
