PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ? The Duke men's fencing team, led by a dominant group of saber competitors, picked up three victories in the season opener last Sunday at the Temple Open, defeating Drew 19-8, Sacred Heart 21-6 and Johns Hopkins 21-6.
After dropping the tournament opener against Penn 20-7, the Blue Devils rattled off three straight victories to walk away with a 3-1 record for the weekend thanks to a strong showing from the saber squad, which won a combined 24 matches in the three victories while dropping just three. The saber squad shut out Drew 9-0 to follow an 8-1 win over Johns Hopkins before ending the day with a 7-2 rout of Sacred Heart.
Duke's foil squad also posted three victories, including a 9-0 shutout against Sacred Heart and 6-3 triumphs over Drew and Johns Hopkins. The epee group finished 2-2 at the tournament, outscoring Johns Hopkins 7-2 and Sacred Heart 5-4.
Juniors Peter Truszkowski and Laughlin Stewart led the saber group with a pair of 9-3 outings, while sophomore David Eitel turned in a 6-1 ledger. Sophomore Peter Franklin also picked up a victory to finish the weekend at 1-4.
In foil competition, all four Blue Devil competitors turned in winning records, including senior Ben Hendricks who led the team with a 10-2 performance. Freshman Dorian Cohen had a successful debut with a 6-4 record to match sophomore Andrew Simon's 6-4 outing. Freshman Charles Keilin also saw action and finished with a three victories in his four matches.
Freshman Graham Godwyn led Duke's epee squad with an 8-2 performance, while senior Zach Moss picked up four victories. Sophomore James Lambert and freshman Marc Shepsman also contributed three victories each.
The Duke men's fencing team will travel to State College, Pa., for a five-team meet on Jan. 26.
