DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke Men's fencing team picked up four victories at the Penn State Duals over the weekend on a pair of 4-1 efforts from both the foil and saber squads.
The Blue Devils (7-2) notched victories over Cleveland State, Drew, Johns Hopkins and Haverford while suffering their only loss at the hands of Penn State. The 22-5 win over Cleveland State marked the team's largest margin of victory to date, while a 21-6 triumph over Drew signaled the third time this season that Duke beat an opponent by 15 points. Duke also picked up a 19-8 win over Haverford and a 17-10 win against Johns Hopkins, while falling 21-6 to Penn State.
In foil competition, senior Ben Hendricks continued his hot streak, going 13-2 on the weekend to improve to 23-4 on the season. Hendricks had just come off of a third-place outing at the North American Cup over the previous weekend and now leads the team with a 23-4 record. Freshman Dorian Cohen went 12-1 over the five-match spread, while sophomore Andrew Simon and freshman Charles Keilin each picked up four victories. After posting a 4-1 record at the Penn State duals, the foil squad now boasts a 7-2 overall record, including a pair of 8-1 triumphs over Drew and Johns Hopkins over the weekend.
In saber competition, juniors Laughlin Stewart and Peter Truszkowski compiled matching 11-4 performances, while sophomore David Eitel went 9-6 to help the squad to a 4-1 record for the weekend. The trio put together a pair of 9-0 efforts against Cleveland State and Drew while also collected two 6-3 wins over Johns Hopkins and Haverford.
Senior captain Zach Moss paced the epee squad with a 10-5 performance to lead the group to victories over Haverford and Cleveland State. Moss improves to a squad-best 14-12 on the season. Joining Moss were freshman Marc Shepsman and James Lambert, who each turned in four victories, and freshman Graham Godwyn, who picked up three wins.
The Duke fencing team will next head to Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on Feb. 2-3 for meetings with Notre Dame, Wayne State, Ohio State and Cleveland State.
