PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ? The Duke women's fencing team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, Sacred Heart and Drew last Sunday to finish 3-3 at the Temple Open in the team's season opener.
Duke dominated Fairleigh Dickinson 26-1 in the tournament opener and rebounded from a 23-4 defeat the hands of Temple to post victories of 15-12 over Drew and 16-11 over Sacred Heart. The Blue Devils also dropped a 17-10 loss against Penn and a 19-8 decision to Northwestern.
All three squads finished 2-4 overall, with the foil group posting a pair of 9-0 shutouts over Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart. The epee squad racked up a pair 8-1 victories over Drew and Fairleigh Dickinson, while the saber team shut out Fairleigh Dickinson 9-0 and closed out the tournament by edging Northwestern 5-4.
Freshman foil competitor Allison Putterman had the best performance of the day with a 9-4 record in her collegiate debut, while senior Marilyn Tycer turned in a 7-7 ledger. Junior Alexandra Stein finished at 6-6 while sophomore Noel Shaskan rounded out the foil squad with a 3-4 mark.
In epee competition, sophomore Nicole Bloom and freshman Erin Pytel turned in matching 9-9 records, while sophomore Jenny Kim finished with four victories.
Senior Amanda Goldenberg led the saber group with nine victories to edge junior captain Jessica Hancock's eight wins. Freshman Margot Mausner also made her collegiate debut and picked up five victories.
The Duke women's fencing team will travel to State College, Pa., for a five-team meet on Jan. 26.
